What is Osteopathy?

Column

Osteopaths treat each person as an individual.

Osteopathy is a natural approach to health It is a way of looking at and treating damaged parts of the body such as muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints.  Osteopaths treat a variety of common conditions including repetitive strain injury, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis and sports injuries.

Osteopathy may alleviate those types of aches, pains and headaches arising from dysfunction within the musculo-skeletal system that can result from either chronic conditions or acute injuries in people of all ages

Meet The Team

EDIT

Male doctor

Dr Neil Watson

I was born and raised in Zimbabwe, where I qualified as a doctor and worked as a GP for four years before coming to London in 1989.

After training as an Osteopath at the London College of Osteopathic Medicine (LCOM), I started off working in London, then Cambridgeshire and Norfolk as well as being a senior tutor at the LCOM.

I started a clinic in Montrose in November 2005, travelling up at weekends from Cambridgeshire and then made Montrose our home in 2006.

EDIT

Female doctor

Anne-Marie Watson

Normally the first person patients speak to at the clinic, I will try to answer any questions you may have, make appointments, and try to help in any way I can. I am also the person who tries to confirm your appointment a day or two before.

I've lived all over the UK and several places abroad, settling in Montrose in 2006.

What Happens During a Consultation

and Treatment?

Column

During the first visit you will be asked to describe the pain or discomfort you are experiencing. You will also be asked general medical questions which could well be relevant to the treatment.

This will be followed by a thorough examination of the muscles and joints of the body.

When a full diagnosis has been made, your osteopath will explain the problem and start the treatment, which is usually gentle and rarely causes pain. You may also be given specific exercise regimes and possibly asked to look at the activities which could have caused your condition, such as posture or work positions.  This will help you to help yourself!  These are designed to aid rehabilitation and hopefully reduce the chance of the problem happening again.

It may be necessary to arrange x-rays or other tests at which point you may be referred back to your GP or through a fast track fee paying service.

What about my Doctor/GP?

Since regulation by parliament, osteopathic treatment has been officially recognized by the general medical council and is in fact, available within certain areas of the NHS . Often you will be referred to an osteopath by your GP. But this is not a necessity to gain access to osteopathic care.
